Rotary East helps fund purchase of auto-refractor

Rotary East has focused its resources on Nicaragua and Global Partners in our International Avenue of Service.  We had an opportunity to support on-going projects in Nicaragua and in particular the purchase of an auto-refractor for vision screening.  Thanks to Tom Mickelson, Karla Stanek, and Mary Thompson for spearheading the effort to purchase equipment to benefit the Global Partners Vision Screening Team prior to their January 2017 visit to Nicaragua.

Rotary East contributed $2,000 to help Global Partners purchase an auto-refractor. An auto-refractor or automated refractor is a computer-controlled machine used during an eye examination to provide an objective measurement of a person's refractive error and prescription for glasses or contact lenses. This is achieved by measuring how light is changed as it enters a person's eye.  The auto-refractor will double the capacity of the team to see patients in rural communities and to continue training Nicaraguan optometrists in its use.

Special thanks to the Rotary Works Foundation for contribution $2,000 toward our grant request.  A grant request was also submitted to District 6250 for an additional $2,000.  A private equipment supplier will contribute the additional $6,000 needed to purchase the $12,000 piece of equipment.
