Attention all Program Chairs!
In an effort to streamline meeting set up and eliminate last-minute issues with technology, please email a copy of the guest's presentation to Randy Van Rooyen prior to the meeting.  Randy will load the presentation on his laptop so the guest speaker doesn't have to worry about technology the day of the meeting.  Guests can bring their own laptop if they insist but we prefer to have the presentations in advance.  Thank you.

Happy 40th Anniversary!
Happy 40th Anniversary, Bob!

A week before his 24th birthday, Bob Allen attended his first Rotary meeting.  Then, in November of 1976, his paperwork was processed and he was "official".

When asked to reflect on Rotary and his experience with the club over the last four decades, Bob shared this:

"My fondest memory is based around projects and the people I have got to know over the last 40 years. Trees for Tomorrow was the clubs first and probably the largest project we have done over the years. We all went door to door on the streets that were going to lose all the Elm trees and got permission to plant a new tree in their boulevard. I knocked on nearly every door on State Street. Going down the street now, you would never know that the boulevards were pretty much cleared of trees over 30 years ago.

Perhaps the most impactful memory for me is remembering like it was yesterday when I joined. I was out of school less than 2 years and knew very few people outside of the university. My hope, like many, was to build a career and feel like a part of the larger community. Nothing was guaranteed and hope was my main asset. The people of Rotary were always supportive and encouraging to me at a young age, and the entire journey as an adult has had Rotary being a part of it. Mondays will always be Rotary day no matter where I am."

Did you know that Bob is the one responsible for inviting Pat Stephens to Rotary 30 years ago?  Pat shared that Bob is a role model for how to be a good Rotarian.

And did you know that among his many contributions to Rotary including serving as President and serving on the Board for 25 years, Bob has spearheaded the Rotary Golf Outing for years?  He singlehandedly manages the entire event, often hustling to beat the golfers back to the clubhouse to make sure all details are attended to.  This is a labor of love for Bob, and area Rotarians appreciate an afternoon of golf, fun, and camaraderie.

On behalf of the entire club, thank you, Bob, for your service, leadership, and dedication.  We're a better club because of you!

District Governor Visit
Pictured from L: District Governor Dean McHugh, East President Elect Spencer Niebuhr, and Assistant Governor Dave Ebner
Welcome District Governor Dean McHugh and Assistant Governor Dave Ebner

On Monday, October 10, we welcomed District Governor Dean McHugh and Assistant Governor Dave Ebner to Rotary East.  Dean will visit all 63 District 6250 clubs - that's about 3,000 members! - by the end of the year.

During his time with us, Dean shared his background and passion for Rotary, including his Rotary "moment".  He participated in an outbound exchange to Columbia while a student at UW-L which sparked his passion for Rotary's youth exchange, which was essentially the reason he joined Rotary.  He shared thoughts on growing and retaining membership and shared a great story about his friend Scott and the impact Rotary has had on him - all because Dean asked him to join.

Dean and Dave met with the Board after lunch to chat about club strengths, challenges, and best practices.  It was a great discussion!
